The Program
The U-Pass is funded in part by a mandatory student fee of $104.36 per term ($26.09 per month) until August 31, 2011. The U-Pass fee is automatically added to your student account when you enroll in a U-Pass eligible course, and must be paid at the same time as your fees and tuition.
The U-Pass Program is a student initiative approved by student vote in Simon Fraser Student Society referendums in November 2002, March 2005, and November 2007. The program is mandatory for all eligible SFU students and provides unlimited, all zone access to public transit in Metro Vancouver (the GVRD) at approximately one-third to one-fifth the cost of a regular monthly transit pass. Once you have your U-Pass, you will not have to pay any additional fares and you will have:
- unlimited access to TransLink Bus (including Community Shuttles and West Vancouver Blue Buses), SkyTrain and SeaBus services (all zones),
- a discount on West Coast Express Train fares.
Your U-Pass is a transit card that shows your name, photo, and expiration date of the card (December 31, April 30 or August 31 depending on the term). A new U-Pass will be issued each term in which you are an eligible enrolled student at SFU.
Highlights of the program
- In the November 2007 U-Pass referendum, students voted 92% in favour of a small fee increase to sustain the U-Pass program until at least September 2011.
- Since the Program’s launch in Spring 2003, we have printed and distributed more than 349,000 U-Pass cards to SFU students.
- Transit ridership to Burnaby Campus has increased 39% since the launch of the U-Pass program in 2003.
