Program

In integrative biology, you will look at all life systems from the cellular level all the way to understanding ecosystems. This program focuses on the various ways those living systems function and adapt to their environments and how they integrate with the rest of the ecological system. Some of the problems that integrative biology students study are how salmon respond to changing temperatures in spawning areas, and how plants and crops might adapt to changing climate conditions. Integrative biologists are also in a good position to study toxicology – how certain oganisms and chemical compounds negatively affect the survival of living things.

Degree offered: BSc

Career opportunities Students in integrative biology go on to careers in medicine, infectious disease research, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and environmental consulting. Many students choose to take their analytical skills and apply them to business, education or government. Biological Sciences students at SFU report a much higher participation in graduate programs than graduates of other BC universities and report gaining employment relevant to their degree at a much higher rate than graduates of other BC universities (Source: The BC University President’s Council 2007 survey of 2002 BC university graduates).
