Program

Sustainable community development is about the integration of economic, social and environmental objectives in the process of community development. At SFU, the Centre for Sustainable Community Development studies the relationship amongst economic factors and community elements such as housing, education, the natural environment, health, accessibility, and the arts. The Centre reaches outside the University to support those working to promote sustainable communities.

Is Sustainable Community Development for you?

The Centre for Sustainable Community Development is for students who seek accreditation in community‑based sustainable development. It is of interest to people who want to tackle practical community challenges in an integrated and interdisciplinary setting.

Sustainable Community Development will be of particular interest to students who prefer the option of evening classes or/and distance education, and who want to develop community projects such as organic farmers’ markets, fair trade enterprises, affordable housing, green transportation, and community arts initiatives.

Areas of study

The Centre for Sustainable Community Development offers courses in a wide range of areas including the theory and practice of Sustainable Community Development, housing and community-building, co-operative economies and globalization, and social enterprises and leadership for Sustainable Community Development.

The Centre offers an undergraduate certificate and post-baccalaureate diploma, graduate support, and a non‑credit professional program.

Sustainable Community Development also offers students the opportunity to network with professionals in related fields, to take on research projects with professors and to work in a wide range of community-based activities.
