Program

Political Science prepares students to develop and apply the disciplinary concepts, analytical tools and critical perspectives necessary to understand current political trends and to assess the alternatives available to states, communities and citizens in today’s rapidly changing world.

Is Political Science for you?

Political Science is for students who have an active interest in public affairs and international events, a willingness to critically engage a wide range of perspectives on politics and public life, and a creative, imaginative approach to their studies.

Political Science is also for students interested in participating in international field schools and exchange programmes in over 20 countries, and for those who want co-op placements in government, NGO and business organizations.

Areas of study

Political Science offers courses covering a range of complex issues including questions about citizenship and social cohesion, the functioning of democracy at home and abroad, the impact of globalization on political institutions and behaviour, the transformation of these institutions and processes in response to social change, and how we might achieve human security while retaining or obtaining key rights and freedoms. Students of Political Science may also participate in student associations such as the SFU Model UN Association, and the Political Science Student’s Union as well as gain job experience
