Program

French offers a wide variety of courses, honours, majors and minors in French language, literature and linguistics, as well as a French language proficiency certificate for anyone who wishes to enhance their knowledge of French for cultural, professional, or employment purposes.

A Certificate in Italian Studies is also now available.

Is French for you?

The French Department is ideal for students with a keen interest in the French or Italian languages and cultures.

It particularly suits students who want to learn about contemporary language and its evolution, its literature, film and theatre, or its linguistics, mutations and accents.

Areas of study

SFU’s French Department is the only one in Western Canada to offer a combination of French/French Canadian literatures and French linguistics, with beginner and advanced language classes, composition and conversation courses. Joint French Majors combine with English, or Humanities, or History and Political Science.

The French Department is home to two multimedia language laboratories; a French Writing Centre; a French reading room; a summer school in France which includes field trips; the Québec summer bursary program; a co‑op education program; a French student union which organises discussion groups, outings, films and an immersion weekend; opportunities to study/work in France; and a Master’s Program and Teaching Assistant opportunities.
