Program

English provides opportunities to gain insight into the world of ideas, to deepen knowledge of great literature and the role of literature in reflecting and shaping culture, and to apply that knowledge.

The history of literature, the study of our language, and training in precise and meaningful writing are important components of English. By refining your research and critical thinking abilities, and by learning to write cogently and persuasively, studying English will help you learn to create and interpret the written word.

Is English for you?

English is for students who enjoy reading and research, and have a sensitivity to language and to honing arguments through writing.

English will be of particular interest to students who have a desire to think critically and creatively about ideas, and to engage in conversation with others about those ideas.

Areas of study

English offers over 150 courses that range across the complete spectrum of English Studies, from Old English and Shakespeare to contemporary Canadian and Asian North American literatures.

English also offers comprehensive distance education courses and cooperative education opportunities. Students can choose from a variety of program options, or enrol in one of our joint major programs with Canadian Studies, French, Humanities, or Women’s Studies.

English offers students the opportunity to participate in a field school in Italy, to join the High Altitude Poetry Club, to work with the Department’s Writer-in-Residence, and even to assist faculty with research. Every April the English Department sponsors a Career Services panel with past alumni or prospective employers.
