Prospective Exchange/Study Abroad Students: Course Enrollment
Course load/units
Most courses at SFU are three units. A full course load in a single term is 15 units. To complete a four-year degree program, students must complete a total of 120 units of courses. The minimum term course load to be considered a full-time undergraduate student is 9 units. Exchange/Study Abroad students are recommended to enroll in no more than 12 units (approximately 4 courses) during their first term at SFU.
As part of your application package, you will be required to send a list of courses you would like to be enrolled in during your first term at SFU. Approval may be required from the appropriate academic department(s), and our staff will manually process your enrollment. If there are any questions or problems with your course selections, you will be contacted prior to the first day of course enrollment. We will do our best to assist you with course enrollment, but we are unable to guarantee access to courses.
Students can find a list of course descriptions and course outlines on the on-line SFU Calendar and can check if the course is being offered for the term they will be at SFU by checking the Student Information System.
Course enrollment begins in July for Fall term courses and in November for Spring term courses. Please DO NOT use the web enrollment system, as you will be dropped from all courses which will lead to difficulties and cause unnecessary delays.
Restricted Programs and Courses
Due to demand and space restrictions, some courses and academic programs have limited or restricted access for exchange/study abroad students.

Course Timetable/Student Class Schedule
Once our office has processed your course enrollment, you will be notified via email of the course schedule for your first term at SFU. Please review your schedule carefully; if you need to change course selections, please contact our office at exchange@sfu.ca. It is possible to change courses during the first week of the term, but it may be difficult as many courses and tutorials tend to be full. Please try to make any changes to your timetable in advance of arriving at SFU.
