Counselling Practicum Placements
Masters Level Counselling Practicum
Health & Counselling Services at SFU offers part-time, unpaid practicum positions to masters level students in counselling and clinical psychology programs. The experience is designed to enable students to further develop their counselling skills, interests, and professional identities.
Opportunities
- An initial 2-week training period focusing on team development, specific counselling topics, and orientation to the Health & Counselling Services
- Working with an integrated team of counselling, medical, and health promotion professionals
- Conducting initial intake appointments for SFU students seeking counselling
- Providing individual and couples counselling for SFU students
- Co-facilitating group counselling
- Crisis intervention and management
- Participating in critical incident stress debriefing
- Facilitation of psych-educational workshops
Supervision
- 1.5 hour individual supervision with a primary supervisor per week
- 1.5 hour group supervision meeting per week
Our expectations
- Enrollment in a Masters level counselling or clinical psychology program
- Mastery of basic counselling skills
- An 8-month, 2.5 days per week commitment (September 2012 – April 2013)
- Students will maintain a caseload of 8-10 client hours per week

- Letter of intent, including statement of professional objectives for the practicum
- Current curriculum vitae
- Official transcripts
- Three letters of evaluation / recommendation from both academic and clinical settings
- A DVD recording of a 50 minute mock counselling session
- Deadline for Application: March 1, 2012
