Health & Counselling Services

Insurance / Fees

All students must maintain BC Medical Services Plan (BC MSP) while attending SFU. Basic medical services provided at SFU are covered by BC MSP. If you do not have BC MSP you will be required to pay for services at the time of your appointment (exception - temporary coverage may apply to those under other Canadian provincial plans - see below for details).

NOTE: Services at SFU Health and Counselling that are not covered by MSP include: birth control, travel medicine services, equipment rentals, and most physicals. Click here for more information.

International students
International students should apply for BC MSP as soon as they enter BC, as applications take 90 days to process. During this waiting period, students must obtain temporary private medical insurance to provide them with coverage. The BC MSP card will become effective 90 days after your arrival in BC and your temporary medical insurance will expire accordingly. International students can visit International Services for Students for information on how to apply for BC MSP and how to obtain temporary private medical insurance for the 90 day waiting period.

Students from other Canadian provinces:
Students from outside BC must also obtain BC MSP. There will be a 90 day waiting period for students from other Canadian provinces for their BC MSP card. During this period, students should maintain coverage with their former medical plan from their home province. Students will need to cancel their medical coverage from their home province once MSP coverage commences. Click here for a full contact list of provincial health insurance providers.

NOTE: An MSP Premium of $60.50/month will be charged to the student after the 90 day waiting period. If the student has an income of less than $30,000 in the previous tax year, they may be eligible to apply for Premium Assistance. Students can also apply for Pharmacare for a reduction in the cost of prescription drugs.

Undergraduate Students:
Undergraduate students who are covered by ihaveaplan or another extended health plan should check with their plans to see what is covered.

Graduate Students:
Graduate students may be able to access extended health insurance through the GSS Graduate Benefit Plan. Any questions should be directed to the GSS Office at 778.782.3899, or info@sfugradsociety.ca.

Students who are SFU employees:
Students who are also employed by SFU may be eligible for extended health insurance. Please check with SFU Human Resources for more information.

Protect yourself against fraud
It is an offence to use another person's personal health number or to knowingly allow your personal health number to be used by another person. If your card is lost or stolen, please contact MSP or your nearest Government Agent/B.C. Access Centre (local offices listed in the blue pages of your telephone directory) as soon as possible to replace it. Click here for more information.
