SFU is offering these sessions to be pro-active about mental health issues. The skills that people will learn will not only add to their toolkit at work but will be useful in all aspects of their lives. Support Over Suicide is a Health and Counselling Services led initiative that is aimed at creating a university community that is sensitive to issues of suicide.

Our goal is to train as many staff, faculty, and students to feel well equipped to interact with someone who is considering suicide. The training includes key interpersonal skills (empathic listening, paraphrasing, and compassion) and steps on how to ask someone if they are suicidal, how to refer them to the appropriate resources, and how to be supportive and intervene in an effective and timely manner. We have currently trained many student services staff and some student groups, and plan on expanding the program to staff and teaching faculty in the various schools and faculties.

These sessions are open to ALL members of the SFU community. People who regularly interact with students (for example faculty) or who have a leadership, "gate-keeper" or "customer-focused" role may find these of particular value.

PLEASE NOTE: These sessions are designed so you can help others and are not therapy. If you have concerns about your own mental health, please see your doctor or a counsellor.

Workshops will be held at the following dates/times. Note the different Campuses/Rooms. To register, please e-mail Eser Ren at eren@sfu.ca.

*Note that these are the same sessions offered on 4 different dates.
