About Dealing with Distress and Distressing
SFU is offering these sessions to be pro-active about mental health issues. The skills that people will learn will not only add to their toolkit at work but will be useful in all aspects of their lives. Student life presents a period of change and challenge for many students.
As a member of the SFU community, you are in a unique position to recognize and identify students in distress. Responding with interest and concern in a timely manner can be critical in helping students link with resources that can support and assist them. This workshop will give participants the tools and know-how to recognize when students are in distress, when they are stepping over boundaries, or when students may be experiencing mental health issues.
Whether in contact with student in person or by email, participants will learn how to manage these students in a compassionate and firm manner by setting boundaries, addressing safety concerns, requesting assistance from others, etc. Information on SFU resources available to staff and faculty to deal with these situations will also be discussed.

PLEASE NOTE: These sessions are designed so you can help others and are not therapy. If you have concerns about your own mental health, please see your doctor or a counsellor.
