Supporting your student
Parents and families contribute to the success of SFU students. How much you are involved, or how little, in your student's SFU career is something you and your student will determine.
Student Information
SFU staff can often answer general questions you may have about the university.
Generally, staff and faculty cannot discuss specific information with anyone other than the student. SFU's primary relationship is with our students, and their privacy is protected by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
In some cases, your student can authorize SFU staff to release information to a third party. We suggest that students contact Student Services for more information.
Resources for Parents
To assist you in supporting your student, SFU has developed some resources specifically for parents including:
Residence and Housing: Parent Information
Financial Planning and Financial Aid
You may also wish to visit the Student Services website for information about all our services for students.
We have also compiled our most Frequently Asked Questions from parents.
If you have a question, please email us at parent-q@sfu.ca
Family Counselling
SFU Health and Counselling Services offers free confidential family counselling services to parents, families and partners of enrolled SFU students. Family counselling can focus on a range of issues including, but not limited to:
If you are concerned about your student's physical, emotional or mental wellbeing;
If you would like to learn how to effectively support your student in their university career and personal development;
If you are experiencing conflict in your relationship with your student.
We can meet individually with parents/caregivers to offer information, support and resources. This service is free and confidential. You may be helped by a short telephone discussion, an email exchange or a confidential consultation. In addition, we are available to meet with a parent and their student together to facilitate communication and problem solving.
For more information about family counselling services , please contact Lisa Milis, Intake and Clinical Counsellor, at 778-782-5821, via email (lmilis@sfu.ca), or visit Health and Counselling.
