Entrance scholarships regulations

Regulations for Community awards and Jack Diamond awards

To receive the first disbursement, you must be enrolled in at least 12 units of courses.

You will not be eligible for your scholarship if you attempt fewer than 12 units and achieve a GPA less than 2.0.

To receive the second disbursement, you must achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.0 and be enrolled in at least 12 units of classes.

You must claim the award in two of the immediately following three terms.

In your third and subsequent terms, you may qualify for an Open Undergraduate Scholarship.

Regulations for Surrey campus awards

To be eligible for your first installment, you must be enrolled in at least 12 units of SFU courses. Of these, 9 units must be courses taken at the Surrey campus, including 6 units in your cohort program

To be eligible for your second installment, you must:

Be enrolled in at least 12 units of SFU courses. Of these, 9 units must be courses taken at the Surrey campus, including 6 units in your cohort program

Meet the required cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.50 on your first term's course work.

You must claim the award in two of the immediately following three terms.

Regulations for Summit, Kenneth Strand, and Academic Excellence scholarships (distributed over two terms)

To receive the first disbursement, you must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units (approximately four courses, depending on the number of units for each course). You will not be eligible for your scholarship if you attempt fewer than 12 units and achieve a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of less than 3.00.

To receive the second disbursement, you must achieve a minimum SFU CGPA of 3.00 and be enrolled in at least 12 units of classes.

You must claim the award in two of the immediately following three terms (or within one year of starting at SFU). If your CGPA drops below 3.00 in any term, this scholarship will be permanently cancelled.

Regulations for major scholarships ($7,000 – $35,000): Dean’s Scholarships, Simon Fraser Scholarships, Simon Fraser Alumni Leadership Scholarships, Gordon M. Shrum Scholarships, Tadeusz Specht Memorial Scholarships in Applied Sciences and in Science

To receive the third and fourth disbursements, you must have a minimum SFU CGPA of 3.50, and be enrolled in and complete a minimum of 12 units per term.

If you attempt fewer than 12 units, your installment will be deferred automatically. However, your academic performance on any work attempted will be considered for future scholarship eligibility.

If, in a subsequent term, you lose eligibility because your SFU CGPA falls below the minimum requirement, you may have an opportunity to recover your scholarship in future terms. However, you cannot regain those disbursements lost during your ineligibility – the first 12 units you accumulate below the minimum CGPA requirement will result in your losing one payment; the second 12 units you accumulate below the minimum CGPA requirement will result in the permanent cancellation of your scholarship.

Scholarships with four disbursements must be claimed within three years of starting your studies at SFU. Those with eight disbursements must be claimed within six years of starting your studies at SFU.

Enrollment in required number of units

You must be enrolled in the required number of SFU units in order to receive your scholarship funds. SFU Co-op units or courses completed at another post secondary institution will not be counted in the required number of SFU units to receive your scholarship funds. Upon request, you can continue receiving your scholarship installments if you are enrolled for one full term with an SFU field school or exchange program.

Dropping courses

If you drop below 12 units after having received any installment, then the funds will be reversed from your student account.

Appeals

If you are unable to meet the scholarship requirements due to extenuating circumstances, we encourage you to submit a scholarship appeal. Appeals must be accompanied by official documentation to support your claim (e.g., death certificate for a relative or letter from a medical professional).

If you want to submit an appeal, email scholars@sfu.ca and describe the circumstances affecting your scholarship.

Deferrals

You may defer your admission (and any scholarship or award offer) for up to one year, provided you have extenuating circumstances and you have no plans to pursue postsecondary study elsewhere. Email deferral@sfu.ca with your reason for deferring your admission and scholarship offer.  Applications will be accepted up to one month before the start of the term to which you were offered admission.

Disbursement schedule

Scholarship installments are disbursed at the end of the second week of classes. You will not be assessed late fees on the amount that is covered by your scholarship. If you have a positive balance owing to you after your scholarship has been disbursed, this will be refunded to you. Refund cheques are not mailed out but are available for pickup at the Student Services General Inquiries counter at the end of the sixth week of classes.
