While participating in a personal & professional development program
Peer Education is a twofold program. It simultaneously supports the larger SFU community through peer-to-peer assistance in six areas, while providing a structured personal and professional development program its volunteers.
There are two levels of participation within Peer Education: Peer Educators and Peer Coaches. All current SFU students can apply to be a Peer Educator in any of the six areas, while returning Peer Educators have the opportunity to take on a mentorship role within the program as a Peer Coach. For more information about the structure of each role click on the links below:
Peer Educator Structure
As a Peer Educator, you are provided with the opportunity to grow personally and professionally, while developing specific and transferable skills in a professional, student-focused environment. This is accomplished through two avenues:
1) Area-Specific Training and Experience: Gain specific and transferable skills through training, ongoing development, volunteering and timely feedback from your area supervisor.
2) Personal & Professional-Development Individually: Enhance your self-awareness, goal setting abilities, and skill development each term as you work on personalized goals in the form of an action plan. Your personalized goal is supported through three 30-minute meetings with your Peer Coach. Goals can relate to your volunteer position, education, and/or work.
Peer Coach Structure
As a returning Peer Educator, you have the opportunity to further enhance your communication and mentoring skills by becoming a Peer Coach. This is a great opportunity to develop skills and gain experience for those interested in careers in counseling, teaching, and management.
As a Peer Coach, support your fellow Peer Educators by aiding them in developing goal-based action plans. Specifically, help them develop, set, and follow-through with their personal goals each term via monthly meetings and timely check-ins.
Peer Coaches receive specific training for their role, as well as on-going development through biweekly meetings and workshops. For specific information, click on any of the six areas listed above to find out the details of this position for that area.
