Admission requirements

The International High School admission requirements website has been updated to include general requirements for over 150 countries, and faculty-specific requirements for over 25 countries – in an all new, easy-to-read format.

We welcome your feedback on how we can further improve our website. Your comments can be sent to Stephanie Froehle (sfroehle@sfu.ca).

English language requirement

All applicants, regardless of country of origin or citizenship status, must demonstrate competence in the English language. For students with less than three years of full-time secondary education in English in Canada or another country where the principal language of instruction is English, IELTS or TOEFL is required.

Please see students.sfu.ca/admission/requirements/ for the full admission policy.

IB Diploma update

Students who have completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma will receive a complete year of transfer credit (30 units). Transfer credit will be awarded for all standard level and higher level subjects that are passed with a grade of 4 or higher. If the total specific assigned credit for all subjects totals less than 30 units, additional general elective credit will be assigned to bring the transfer credit total to 30 units.

IB Coordinators/School counsellors submit the IB Predicted Grades form.

26 IB points = admission to most programs except Business.

Partial IB diploma students receive transfer credit for HL courses completed with a grade of 5.

Students are automatically considered for a number of entrance scholarships, including the $3,500 International Summit Scholarship, awarded to all secondary high school students with an average of 91%+ (or 30 IB points). Students with an average of 95%+ (or 34 IB points) will receive the $5,000 International Academic Excellence scholarship.

English is the language of instruction at SFU, yet our experience in Student Services tells us that admission and enrollment terminology can be challenging for all students. Student Information System tutorial videos (students.sfu.ca/advising-support/help-videos.html) are available in English, with selected videos also provided in Mandarin.
